For investing, you can start with The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason. It is a classic text on personal finance that everyone should read. It takes only a few hours to read, but can take years to fully apply. After that, try The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham. According to Buffett it is "the best book on investing ever written". If your accounting knowledge is decent, you can graduate to Security Analysis by Benjamin Graham and David Dodds, 1934 or 1940 editions. If you finish and fully understand Security Analysis, you will have been well prepared to begin your foray into the world of investments. This should take you at most a couple of years, perhaps just months if you're a quick learner.

The 1940 edition is usually considered to be the last one in which Graham and Dodd (not Dodds, sorry - just checked my books) had significant input. After that, the text was edited and revised by different authors. From 1951 onwards, for example, Charles Tatham was involved. I don't have the 1951 edition so I can't comment on the quality of Charles' writing. Take note that the 1940 edition refers to the 1934 edition for some examples, so if you want a self-contained text, the 1934 might be a better buy. I got the 1940 first, but found myself wondering what the examples in the 1934 being referred to were, so I ended up buying the 1934 as well.

For The Intelligent Investor the current paperback edition contains the original 1974 text, plus comments added by Jason Zweig. Fortunately, one can simply ignore Jason's writing if desired. I have the hardcover 1974 edition, so I don't have Jason's additional input.
